چکیده

This document provides a mechanism to address issues that arise when TCP is used for traffic that exhibits periods where the sending rate is limited by the application rather than the congestion window. It provides an experimental update to TCP that allows a TCP sender to restart quickly following a rate-limited interval. This method is expected to benefit applications that send rate-limited traffic using TCP while also providing an appropriate response if congestion is experienced. This document also evaluates the Experimental specification of TCP Congestion Window Validation (CWV) defined in RFC 2861 and concludes that RFC 2861 sought to address important issues but failed to deliver a widely used solution. This document therefore reclassifies the status of RFC 2861 from Experimental to Historic. This document obsoletes RFC 2861.

Influence of the Discarding the Out-of-profile Packets Policy on TCP traffic

In the recent year a variety of approaches for QoS support in the Internet such as Integrated Services [1], Differentiated Services [2], Bandwidth Distribution Scheme (BDS) [3], and others have been proposed. Most of the proposed approaches rely on the traffic policing unit, which may mark, delay, or drop packets that arrive above their reserved rate. The packets that arrive above their reserve...

Effectiveness of rate-limiting in mitigating flooding DOS attacks

This paper investigates the effectiveness of rate-limiting in mitigating TCP-based flooding Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. Rate-limiting is used as a DoS defense mechanism to discard a fraction of incoming attack packets. Part of legitimate traffic is, however, mis-detected as attack traffic. The main contribution of this paper is to find out how much a DoS attack can be rate-limited without ...

GFR - A NEW SERVICE CATEGORY TO SUPPORT TCP TRAFFIC OVER ATM K.Jayanthi, G.Florence Sudha and P.Dananjayan

The TCP/IP protocol is the standard requirement for all applications that need to communicate over the Internet. Guaranteed Frame Rate GFR, a recently approved service category by ATM Forum is best suited to efficiently support TCP/IP Traffic in ATM networks. GFR is proposed to overcome the performance degradation problems faced by TCP/IP Applications over ATM. It is intended to provide minimum...

Impact of Gateway Discovery on Tcp-connections in Manets

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) can be formed in scenarios where the access to the Internet is demanded. Most of the Internet traffic could be supported by TCP traffic (e.g. HTTP traffic). However, TCP technology needs to be adapted to cope with the different features of the wireless (the MANET node) and the wired (Internet host) mediums. The functionalities for this adaptation could be implemen...

Guaranteed Frame Rate : a better service for TCP/IP in ATM networks

Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) recently approved by the ATM Forum is expected to become an important service category to efficiently support TCP/IP traffic in ATM networks. We first describe the GFR traffic contract in details. We then present different types of switch implementations that have been proposed to support GFR. We analyze the performance of three of these switch implementations by sim...
